Standard Form Calculator (GCSE Maths)

This standard form calculator helps GCSE Maths students convert numbers to and from standard form. Standard form is used to write very large or very small numbers in a compact, easy-to-read way.

Standard form is written as:

a × 10n where 1 ≤ a < 10

It is commonly used in science, physics, astronomy, and higher-level maths.

Worked examples

Example 1: Convert to standard form

Write 45,000 in standard form.

Move the decimal point until the number is between 1 and 10:

45,000 → 4.5 (moved 4 places to the left)

So:

45,000 = 4.5 × 104


Example 2: Convert from standard form

Write 3.2 × 103 as an ordinary number.

Multiply 3.2 by 10³:

3.2 × 1000 = 3200

Answer: 3200
